Judges Chapter 15 – Samson's Revenge Against the Philistines
Bible Study: Judges Chapter 15
Judges Chapter 15 tells us about the continuing conflict between Samson and the Philistines, and how God used Samson to deliver the Israelites from their enemies.
This chapter teaches us important lessons about anger, revenge, forgiveness, God's power, and the importance of turning to God when we are weak and in need.
Although Samson was given extraordinary strength, he also struggled with anger and personal weaknesses. Through his experiences, we learn that our true strength comes from God.
1. Samson's Anger Because His Wife Was Given to Another Man (Verses 1–3)
Some time later, during the wheat harvest, Samson went to visit his wife, bringing a young goat as a gift.
He wanted to enter her room, but her father refused to let him see her.
His father-in-law explained that he thought Samson hated his wife, so he had given her in marriage to Samson's companion.
He even offered Samson his wife's younger sister instead.
Samson became very angry and felt justified in taking revenge against the Philistines.
Spiritual Lessons:
• When we experience disappointment, betrayal, or unfair treatment, anger can easily arise in our hearts.
• We should not allow our emotions to control our decisions.
• Instead of seeking revenge, we should pray and ask God for wisdom and patience.
God wants us to respond to difficult situations with grace rather than hatred.
2. Samson Burns the Philistines' Crops (Verses 4–5)
Samson caught 300 foxes (some Bible translations use the word jackals).
He tied them together in pairs, attached torches between their tails, and set the torches on fire.
He then released them into the Philistines' fields.
As a result, the Philistines' grain, vineyards, and olive groves were burned.
The destruction caused great damage to their crops and livelihood.
Spiritual Lessons:
Anger can have consequences beyond ourselves.
Sometimes our actions hurt not only the people we are angry with but also innocent people around us.
We should learn to pause, pray, and seek God's guidance before reacting emotionally.
A peaceful heart is more valuable than winning an argument or getting even with someone.
3. The Philistines Take Revenge on Samson (Verses 6–8)
When the Philistines discovered that Samson was responsible for burning their crops, they became furious.
They learned that Samson's father-in-law and wife were involved in the situation.
The Philistines went and burned Samson's wife and her father to death.
When Samson heard what had happened, he became extremely angry and attacked the Philistines.
He inflicted a great defeat upon them before retreating to a cave in the rock of Etam.
Spiritual Lessons:
This passage shows how revenge can create a destructive cycle.
One act of anger leads to another, and one act of revenge creates further suffering.
God teaches us that revenge does not bring lasting peace.
Romans 12:19 reminds us:
"Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath."
We should place our pain, injustice, and disappointments into God's hands and ask Him to guide us.
Forgiveness does not mean that wrongdoing is acceptable. It means we refuse to let hatred control our hearts.
4. The Men of Judah Hand Samson Over to the Philistines (Verses 9–13)
The Philistines came to Judah and camped near Lehi.
The people of Judah became frightened and sent 3,000 men to find Samson at the cave of Etam.
They questioned him about why he had provoked the Philistines and brought danger upon their people.
Samson explained that he had only repaid the Philistines for what they had done to him.
The men of Judah then decided to bind Samson and hand him over to the Philistines.
Samson agreed, but asked them to promise that they would not kill him themselves.
They tied him with two new ropes and brought him out of the cave.
Spiritual Lessons:
The people of Judah were so afraid of their enemies that they were willing to surrender the man whom God had chosen to deliver them.
Sometimes fear causes us to lose confidence in God's power.
When difficulties arise, we may feel helpless or discouraged.
However, we must remember that God is greater than the challenges we face.
Let us remain faithful and trust Him even when circumstances seem impossible.
5. Samson Defeats 1,000 Philistines with a Donkey's Jawbone (Verses 14–17)
When Samson arrived at Lehi, the Philistines came shouting triumphantly to meet him.
But the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon Samson.
The ropes binding his arms became like burned flax, and they fell from his hands.
Samson then found a fresh donkey's jawbone.
He picked it up and used it to strike down 1,000 Philistines.
After this great victory, Samson declared in a poem:
"With a donkey's jawbone I have made donkeys of them; with a donkey's jawbone I have killed a thousand men."
This was an extraordinary victory.
However, the important lesson is that Samson's victory was not simply the result of his physical strength or the weapon he used.
It was God's power working through him.
Spiritual Lessons:
• Our strength comes from God, not from ourselves.
• God can use ordinary things to accomplish extraordinary purposes.
• We should never underestimate what God can do through us.
• When God gives us success, we should give Him the glory rather than become proud.
What seems small or insignificant in our hands can become useful when placed in God's hands.
6. Samson Becomes Thirsty, and God Provides Water (Verses 18–20)
After defeating 1,000 Philistines, Samson became extremely thirsty and exhausted.
He cried out to the Lord:
"You have given your servant this great victory. Must I now die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?"
God heard his prayer.
God opened up a hollow place at Lehi, and water came out of it.
Samson drank the water, and his strength returned.
He named that place En Hakkore, which means "the spring of the one who called."
Samson led Israel as a judge for twenty years during the period of Philistine oppression.
Spiritual Lessons:
This is one of the most meaningful passages in Judges Chapter 15.
Even though Samson had extraordinary strength, he still became tired, thirsty, and weak.
When he called upon God, the Lord heard him and provided what he needed.
This teaches us four important lessons:
1. When we are physically or emotionally exhausted, we can ask God for strength.
2. When our hearts feel spiritually dry, we can come to God for renewal.
3. When we face difficulties, we should never forget the power of prayer.
4. God knows our needs and hears our sincere prayers.
Just as God provided water for Samson, He can renew our hearts and give us strength to continue our journey.
7. Six Important Spiritual Lessons from Judges Chapter 15
1. Do Not Allow Anger to Control Your Life
When people hurt or disappoint us, we should pray before reacting. Ask God to give us patience and wisdom.
2. Revenge Creates More Suffering
Revenge often leads to more conflict and pain. Forgiveness helps release bitterness and allows our hearts to experience God's peace.
3. Trust God During Difficult Times
Do not lose faith when life becomes challenging. God is always greater than our problems.
4. Our True Strength Comes from God
Samson's victory reminds us that God's power is greater than human strength.
5. God Can Use Ordinary Things for Extraordinary Purposes
The donkey's jawbone was an ordinary object, but God used it in a remarkable way.
Never underestimate what God can accomplish through an ordinary person who depends on Him.
6. Turn to God When You Are Tired and Weak
When Samson became thirsty, he cried out to God, and God provided water.
Likewise, when we feel tired, worried, or discouraged, we should come to the Lord in prayer.
8. The Main Message of Judges Chapter 15
God Is Our Strength and the Source of Living Water
Judges Chapter 15 reminds us that even a strong person like Samson can become weak, tired, and thirsty.
When Samson called upon God, the Lord heard him and provided water.
In the same way, we should turn to God whenever we face difficulties, exhaustion, disappointment, or spiritual dryness.
Our human strength is limited, but God's grace is always sufficient.
We do not need to face life's challenges alone. God is always ready to hear our prayers and guide our steps.
9. Prayer Based on Judges Chapter 15
A PRAYER FOR OURSELVES, OUR FAMILIES, AND ALL CHRISTIAN BROTHERS AND SISTERS
Heavenly Father,
We come before You with grateful hearts.
Thank You for giving us another day to read Your Word and learn from Judges Chapter 15.
Through Samson's experiences, we are reminded that human strength is limited, but Your power, love, and grace are unlimited.
Dear Lord, please forgive us when we allow anger, resentment, jealousy, and bitterness to enter our hearts.
Sometimes, when people hurt us or treat us unfairly, we become upset and want to defend ourselves or seek revenge.
Please teach us to be patient, humble, and forgiving.
Help us control our emotions and not allow anger to influence our words and actions.
Give us wisdom to respond to difficult situations with love, understanding, and grace.
Dear Heavenly Father,
When we face difficulties in our families, pressures at work, financial worries, or uncertainty about the future, please guide us and strengthen our faith.
When we are tired, give us strength.
When our hearts are spiritually thirsty, refresh us with Your living water.
When we feel lonely or helpless, remind us that You are always with us.
When our minds are restless and filled with worries, please calm our hearts with Your peace.
Lord Jesus,
We especially pray for all our Christian brothers and sisters.
Please watch over every family and bless every home with love, harmony, and understanding.
Help husbands and wives love and respect one another.
Help parents and children understand, support, and forgive one another.
Where there is misunderstanding, bring reconciliation.
Where there is sadness, bring comfort.
Where there is conflict, bring peace.
Where there is weakness, provide strength.
We pray especially for brothers and sisters who are sick or suffering.
Please comfort them, strengthen them, and provide the care and healing they need.
We also pray for those facing financial difficulties, work pressures, family problems, loneliness, or emotional struggles.
May they experience Your presence and find hope in Your promises.
Lord, please bless our pastors, church leaders, ministers, and everyone who serves You.
Give them wisdom, patience, strength, and a loving heart as they serve Your people.
Holy Spirit, guide our thoughts, words, and actions each day.
Help us grow in faith through reading Your Word and spending time in prayer.
Teach us not only to seek Your blessings but also to obey Your will.
May we remain faithful to You in both good times and difficult times.
Heavenly Father, we surrender our worries, burdens, families, and future into Your loving hands.
Thank You for being our strength when we are weak, our comfort when we are sad, and our hope when life becomes difficult.
May Your love surround us, Your peace fill our homes, and Your grace sustain all our Christian brothers and sisters.
We thank You for hearing our prayers.
We pray all these things in the precious and holy name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Amen. Amen.
10. Words of Encouragement for All Christian Brothers and Sisters
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Judges Chapter 15 reminds us that even Samson, a man with extraordinary strength, experienced moments of weakness and exhaustion.
We are no different.
Sometimes we work very hard but still feel tired.
Sometimes we worry about our families, children, work, health, and future.
Sometimes we carry burdens in our hearts that we cannot easily share with others.
But let us remember these beautiful truths:
• When you are tired, God is your strength.
• When you are thirsty, God is your living water.
• When you are sad, God is your comfort.
• When you feel helpless, God is your refuge.
• When you are worried, God is your peace.
Never give up praying. Never lose faith in God.
Every day, surrender your burdens to the Lord and trust Him to guide you through every season of life.
May the peace of Jesus Christ fill the hearts of all Christian brothers and sisters.
May God bless everyone with:
• Good health and spiritual strength.
• Peace and happiness in every family.
• Wisdom and guidance in daily decisions.
• Protection and safety wherever we go.
• Strong faith, hope, and love in Jesus Christ.
May God's grace be with all of us today, tomorrow, and always.
In Jesus' precious name, Amen.
